Micron

Semiconductor manufacturing company Micron plans to invest $100 billion in a New York plant that could create up to 50,000 jobs, according to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Schumer said Micron would establish the facility at the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay, New York. The company will produce chips for various industries, such as automobiles, computers, and mobile phones. The investment would begin with $20 billion by 2030 and eventually reach $100 billion in 20 years. Micron expects to add 9,000 jobs, and the region could see an additional 40,000 jobs for accompanying positions, including contractors and suppliers.

Schumer highlighted the importance of Micron’s expansion and said the U.S. would face an economic and national security risk if it could not manufacture chips domestically. Schumer also said Micron's facility will be the most advanced memory chip facility in the United States and "probably the world."

The development follows Congress’ $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act which allocated nearly $53 billion for the semiconductor industry. It also comes after Micron’s announcement in September that it would spend $15 billion on a semiconductor location and create 17,000 jobs in Boise.

Micron also operates chip manufacturing sites in other regions, including Taiwan and Singapore.
